During their tour they will have the opportunity to view the facilities and visit with Western Iowa Tech Community College's president Dr. Robert Dunker, also vice president of the Downtown Sioux City Rotary Club. "This visit will strengthen WITCC's international educational programs and partnerships," said Dunker. "And students at the college will gain valuable experiences throughout this exchange visit."
The guests will also attend an American History class taught by Dr. Rudolph Daniels, assistant dean for special projects. The class will be covering the foundations of American democracy and will allow the Russian and American students an opportunity to have a question-and-answer session.
Dr. Daniels feels this is a great way to bring two cultures together and is excited about what WITCC can offer the visitors. "WITCC represents the best in education for American citizenry," said Daniels. "Studying the foundations of our government will be an excellent learning opportunity for our visitors."
Rotary International is host to the event and will be leading the guests on tours of City Hall, the Federal Building and the court house, among others. WITCC was chosen to be a part of the Russian tour to America because the participants are here to visit and learn about state-run institutions. "We want to showcase as many parts of the American system as possible," said Ester May Cox, Rotary Youth Exchange Chair. "The Rotary is anxious to meet our visitors and answer their questions."
Funding from the Library of Congress "Open World Russian Leadership Program" made the Russian guests' U.S. tour possible. Many different groups will be touring the U.S. The Siouxland area is host to three visitors including Vyacheslav Satin, Aleksandr Yegorov and an escort/interpreter Nadezhda Zabelina. Sioux City is their first stop followed by Marshall, Minn., and Brookings, S.D.
