Open World Welcomes Peruvian Members of Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, Open World Leadership Center welcomes its first delegation of Peruvian Members of Congress for a 10-day professional program. After an orientation in Washington, D.C., delegates will be hosted by Friendship Force Club of Austin in Austin, TX from July 14-20.

Four of the visiting delegates are Members of Congress of the Republic of Peru. The group is escorted by a bilingual, bicultural facilitator who is employed by the U.S. Embassy in Peru. Delegates are participating in Open World’s Members of Parliament program that covers transparency in government and constituent engagement.

In partnership with House Democracy Partnership (HDP), this visit is a direct result of Open World’s legislative ties to U.S. Congress. HDP, is a bipartisan, twenty-member commission of the U.S. House of Representatives that works directly with partner countries around the world to support the development of effective, independent, and responsive legislative institutions. Peru’s Congress of the Republic of Peru is a partner legislature to HDP.

While in Washington, delegates will meet members of HDP including Rep. Peter Roskam (IL-06), Chairman, Rep. David Price (NC-04), Ranking Member, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (NE-01), Rep. Dina Titus (NV-01), and Rep. Steve Womack (AR-03). Delegates will also meet members of the Subcommittee on Legislative Branch Appropriations including Rep. Kevin Yoder (KS-03), Chairman and Rep. Scott Taylor (VA-02). Additional meetings include Sen. Roger Wicker (MS), staff of Sen. John Kennedy (LA), and staff of Rep. John Carter (TX-31). Sen. Roger Wicker, Rep. Price, and Rep. Fortenberry also serve on Open World’s Board of Trustees.

In Austin, delegates will meet local government officials and community leaders. Additional partner organizations include: GlobalAustin, Texas Partners of the Americas, Austin-Lima Sister Cities Committee, PanAmerican Roundtable and Consulate General of Peru in Houston, TX.
