Senator Martin Heinrich Named to Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On October 16 President pro tempore Patrick Leahy appointed The Honorable Martin Heinrich of New Mexico to the Board of Trustees of the Open World Leadership Center pursuant to the provisions of 2 U.S.C. 1151, as amended. Senator Heinrich moves into a trustee position vacated by The Honorable Carl Levin of Michigan.

Before winning his Senate seat in 2012, Senator Heinrich served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He sits on the Committees on Energy and Natural Resources, Intelligence, Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and the Joint Economic Committee.

New Mexico has hosted 340 Azerbaijani, Kyrgyzstani, Russian, Serbian, Turkmen, and Ukrainian Open World participants since the program began in 1999.  Host cities include Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, White Rock, Las Cruces, and La Mesa.

Open World supports Congressional outreach to Eurasia and other countries. It conducts exchanges that establish lasting professional relationships between the up-and-coming leaders of Open World countries and Americans dedicated to showcasing U.S. values and democratic institutions.  Open World has introduced more than 19,000 current and future decision makers from Russia, other countries of Eurasia, Egypt, and now Turkey to American political and civic life, and to their American counterparts. Established in 1999, The Center is the first and only international exchange agency in the U.S. Legislative Branch.
